HAGERSVILLE, Ontario — After spending the past couple of months with racing suspended due to the corona virus, Emms Racing will return to action on Saturday at Jukasa Motor Speedway.
Canada’s Crown Jewel will serve as the sight for the season opener for the Queenston Chevrolet Buick GMC OSCAAR Modifieds presented by Scott Reinhart Trailer Sales Ltd., Touchwood Cabinets, and The Fyre Place & Patio Shop.
“I think it’s pretty cool to be coming to Jukasa for the first race of the season,” A.J. Emms said. “It’s a race that I think would be very special to win, or to even run up at the front. We’re looking just to see if our homework in the off-season paid off for us.
“But with so many good cars in the OSCAAR Modified division and going to one of the best tracks in Ontario, if not Canada, if not North America, it’s pretty special to be a part of and I’m pretty fortunate that I’m able to do it. With everything that’s happening this year, it’s pretty cool that APC, OSCAAR, and GForce and all the partners put the event together.”
Emms has been successful there in the past, scoring a runner-up finish in his debut appearance at the facility in 2018, followed by a heat victory and 10th last season.
“I think the first year we ran there, the track was definitely new; we were able to run up at the front and have a good solid day,” he reflected. “The second year we went back, we were able to run at the front, we won our heat, and I think I was second fastest to J.R. (Fitzpatrick) on the initial day. We had a torrential downpour there last year and came back the next day, and I don’t what I did or what happened to it, but my car was a totally different racecar. So we went over our notes and saw some of the areas that we feel will help us at Jukasa.
“I think with a different tire, another year on the track, no races there yet this year – those are all factors that we’re going to have to think about as we progress into this weekend. And just in addition to that, having this being everybody’s first race of the year will without a doubt not only change the atmosphere, but how we operate around and on the race track. I think there are a lot of factors that are affecting this weekend and it could go one of two ways – we’ll just hope they go our way.”
For Emms, being able to score the feature victory on Saturday at Jukasa would mean a lot to him, as he recalled spending time at the facility as a young kid watching races with his father. During that time, he notes hearing a lot of stories of greats like Dick Trickle and Don Biederman accomplishing the feat.
“To put my name on the list of winners would be very important to me,” he expressed. “So I feel going into this weekend, just like any other weekend, we’re going to minimize mistakes, run the best that we can, and hopefully things go our way and hopefully we can put it in victory lane.”
Following this weekend at Jukasa, Emms will get back behind the wheel of the No. 14 Modified in September on two occasions, heading to Flamboro Speedway on the 12th, before returning to Jukasa on the 26th.
“Without a doubt, Flamboro is another track that has a lot of history and character,” he commented. “It’s one that spending a lot of time with Mike Westwood in the past, I’ve gotten to run a lot of laps there. So it’s a place that I’m comfortable with and a place that I really enjoy going. The renovations that they’ve done this year – they’ve done a fantastic job with the facility.
“So for me, to have that as the next track to go to in being Flamboro, I’m very pleased with that. Obviously with our success there, we’re very excited to get to that race track and yes, hopefully, minimize our mistakes, and have luck on our side. The biggest thing for us is getting back out racing and to the race track, but we also enjoy doing our best and hopefully our best gets us the win.”
